9 Smart Dogs For Equally Smart Dog Parents

By
Naomi Wickens
Not all dogs are equipped with the same level of intelligence. It is worth noting, however, that even those breeds blessed with optimum smarts, can only actualize their gifts with utmost guidance from their humans. If you are in search of the smartest dog breeds out there, here is a list made just for you.

1. Border collie

Border collies are known for many things. They are oozing with warmth and energy, and, of course, lots of smarts. This breed is smart enough to excel in herding sheep and other farm animals. They are quite agile, hence they excel in athletic tricks as well. If you are in need of a cuddle, this is also the dog breed you need on your side.

2. Poodle

When it comes to dog ranking based on popularity, the poodle claims the seventh spot. Poodles are best for dog owners who live an active lifestyle since this breed is quite active too. In fact, you can train poodles to hunt and track, retrieve and obey. For these reasons this canine breed is considered one of the smartest.

3. German shepherd

If you want a dog that’s confident, brave, and intelligent, you can’t go wrong with a German shepherd. These exact qualities are what make this breed the second most favored dogs by canine enthusiasts. They may not be as affection as, let’s say, a Border collie, they are nonetheless loyal to their owners.

4. Golden retriever

This sporting dog is known for their intense devotion to their master as well as their obvious intelligence. Golden retrievers are smart enough to qualify for serious canine jobs such as rescuer, hunter, and seeing-eye dog. They are great companions too.

5. Doberman pinscher

A true sporting dog is fast, resilient, and strong. All these qualities the Doberman pinschers possess. To top it all off, this dog breed also scores high in terms of intelligence. Such characteristics easily qualify them as war or police dogs.

6. Shetland sheepdog

If you want a smaller version of the Border collie, the Shetland sheepdog is your best bet. This dog breed possess enough smarts to learn new tricks fast. They manifest unmatched loyalty to their owner, thus they prove to be highly effective watchdogs.

7. Labrador retriever

Labrador retrievers are known for their friendliness. But do not mistake their being affable to being dumb, however. In fact, the opposite is true. These dogs are blessed with the level of intelligence that makes them apt rescue and guide dogs. They also happen to be United States’ most favorite canine companion.

8. Papillon

You ca never go wrong with a happy pup. And the papillon fits this bill quite accurately. In the French language, papillon translates to butterfly. This is an apt name since these smart dogs are quite graceful and fast on their feet.

9. Bloodhound

Bloodhounds are not the most good looking dogs out there. Their ears are droopy and their faces are wrinkled. What they lack in obvious cuteness, they compensate with their interesting personality matched with palpable intelligence.
